My first venture into the writing of author Michael Siemsen was his supernatural / action-adventure story “The Dig”. The book was not perfect, but it was good enough that I wanted to try another of his works and so I picked up “A Warm Place to Call Home”. I knew little about it going in, except that according to previous reviewers, it was a large departure from Siemsen’s other works.

After reading it, I’m still not sure how to categorize the book. It’s not really science fiction, it’s kinda romance but not really, and although the main character is a demon - it’s certainly not a horror story. So again, I’m not entirely sure what to call the book. I can tell you this though. It was fun to read. I enjoyed Fredrick from the very beginning and his honest (if somewhat strange) perspective and humor was refreshing to read. Be aware, this book is not for younger readers. It is littered with language and pretty descriptive sex scenes and would most certainly be an “R” rated movie if it ever where to become one. Much of the language is unnecessary, but there are certain times when a word here or there does add to the humor of that particular scene.

The last third of the book takes a turn in a direction I didn’t see coming and while everything didn’t happen the way I wanted it to, I understand why Siemsen opted for that direction. It certainly makes the book less predictable, and that is usually a good thing. Then at the very end…..in the last three or four lines of the book, Siemsen throws in a little something……just a very slight change in pronouns, that could completely change how the story really ends. But there is no explanation or confirmation one way or the other. It was cruel and genius at the same time. I had to go back and re-read that last page or two a couple of times to make sure I hadn’t missed something.
All in all, a very strange and very enjoyable book. I’m deducting one star because the book is a little more “R” rated than what I prefer to read, but I still enjoyed it. It was certainly a departure from the usual and I applaud Siemsen for taking the risk. I think it paid off for him.

After reading several books in a row that weren't that great I really enjoyed this book. Most books about demon's follow the standard biblical story of the fall from Grace, etc. but this one is very different. Fredrick seems more of a displaced soul than a demon, at least the way we think of demon's. He jumps from person to person living their lives until he gets tired and moves on until he falls in love and as usual love changes everything. He takes over the life of her boyfriend in order to be with her and ... I don't do spoilers but it was nice to read a book where I didn't see the ending coming from a mlle away, you honestly do root for Fredrick to get the girl and there are the fun moments of seeing Fredrick just trying to be a normal person. If you have ever had one of those moments where you wanted to be step out of your life and be someone else, I think you'll enjoy this book. I read it in two days.
A Warm Place to Call Home started out slowly for me, because I did not care much for Frederick the demon. What a nasty piece of work this demon be! But author Michael Siemsen made me care about Frederick, root for him even, as he takes over the body, and life, of an average guy. I gobbled up the rest of the story in twenty-four hours.

Michael Siemsen takes the reader where he wants them to go, twisting and turning Frederick's story in directions that made me sit up and smile. This is not a predictable demon story, and kept my interest until the very last paragraph! The characters are multi-dimensional, real life human beings that I would love to know in real life. The dialogue is well written and believable, helping the story move along at a good clip. The dialogue's rhythm was real, just like people have conversations in real life.

As the story progressed, I found myself totally involved in Frederick's journey as he learns some important lessons about life, and his own past. Frederick finds himself with a new job and a beautiful girlfriend. He's also in the middle of a large and complicated family (who's family isn't complicated?). As a reader, I'm not sure I believe that demons exist, but I find the characters in this story totally believable. The characters are crafted with human failings that I could easily identify with--their pain, and their joys, are real and represent the human experience.

This book is about a demon named Frederick. Seriously. It was so different from other things that I have read and the other books that Mr. Siemsen has written. I really enjoyed Frederick. I loved the story line and the twists and turns that it took. I don't generally read books more than once, but I learn something different about Frederick each time I read it. One thing that I learned is that I definitely want to read more about him! It's not often that you root for a demon, but in this case, you will be.
I like the way this book is written. Personal. Casual. The demon tells the story to me the reader as if we were two friends having coffee. Brilliant. Different.

I'm doing 3 stars because I just finished and I'm confused. I started out liking this demon. Then midway, his appeal began to waiver, I wasn't so sure. In the end, still likable. Now I'm just going to leave this review right here so I can think about what just happened. I'm going to reread a few pages and then, I'll be back!
